Reiterating its commitment to reposition technical and vocational education in the state, the Edo State Government has announced that it has partnered with UNICEF and other collaborators to bring digital learning to all of the state’s technical and vocational schools.
At the two-day Edo State Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Conference held in Benin City, with the theme “How Can State and Non-State Actors Promote Demand-Driven Quality TVET?” the Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, revealed this information during her welcome address.
The Commissioner said that the building of the 20 new TVET schools spread throughout the state’s 18 local councils will start this year, citing significant initiatives being taken by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led state government to reform the TVET subsector in Edo State.
She said, “We have partnered with UNICEF and Nigerian Learning Passport to introduce digital learning into our TVET schools.” In this pilot program, Benin Technical College and Usugbenu Technical College, Irrua, are the two institutions we are using. Making ensuring every one of our TVET students is digitally literate is the aim.
“We intend to train our young people for roughly 17 industries, ranging from the oil and gas to the creative industries, as part of the continuing reforms of our TVET sub-sector by our board. Moving ahead, the focus will be on abilities and practical knowledge.
There are several types of skills. The building of the 20 new TVET schools, which the government intends to open throughout the state’s 18 Local Government Areas, will start this year.
“To start formalizing the non-formal apprenticeship sector, our board of TVET is serious about working with our master craftsmen and women and the private sector,” the speaker continued. Our young people would benefit if we can legalize the unorganized industry.
